Delivering Holiday Cookies

baby-boy-stylemom-style-blog

Over the weekend, we delivered holiday cookies to some of our neighbors. In my past life (read: a few months ago) I would have thought this act impalpable. I applaud my mom-friends who make holiday treats to thoughtfully distribute to their communities. Spreading cheer everywhere they go.  I never thought that could be me because, well I’m lazy when it comes to stuff like that!

If you’ve been reading this blog for a bit, you’ve probably heard me talk about how I frequently shop at Whole Foods. When searching for places to live, I like to search for places within walking distance to a good market. It makes life so much easier for me mostly becuase parking can really stress me out and I have a bad habit of always forgetting something important, thus making multiple trips to the store. Am I alone in this? Please say no. I’ve lived near a Whole Foods for the past 6 years (3 different apartments) and I know just about everything they have in stock and exactly where and when to find it!

One of my favorite guilty pleasures there is Immaculate Baking’s Chocolate Chunk Cookie Dough. H and I made some this weekend (takes about 20 minutes total) and gave some to the neighbors for the holidays. We like to add our own things to the Chocolate Chunk Cookie Dough like chocolate covered raisins (one of my other Whole Foods staples) or plain raisins and rolled-oats to make them a little extra special. We made the ones below plain because that is H’s favorite.

How funny is she in this video? Apologies for the blurry bits and background noise there guys, I’m working on my production skills. 🙂 Throw your tips my way!immaculate-gluten-free-bakinggluten-free-cookiesimmaculte-baking

Someone couldn’t keep her hands off of the cookies!

Off to give some cookies to the neighbors! Harlowe had to bring this piece of her artwork with her.

Two Easy-Peasy Snack Recipes

Being constantly on-the-go means reaching for anything nearby the moment I become ‘hangry’. Often the nearest thing is not the best thing which is why I try to have health-conscious snacks on hand. Don’t get me wrong, I would probably eat chips and guac twice a day if I could, but in trying to set a good example for our kids I have to supplement some good-for-you treats too! Plus, it can be difficult to carry chips and guacamole in a diaper bag.

Both of these recipes are made with LÄRABAR Cashew and Almond Butter, a new item available exclusively at Costco. The rest of the ingredients are pretty easy to find — you probably have most of them at home right now. I did and that’s why I made these. Feel free to adapt these to utilize what you’re working with in the pantry. My ingredients are below and this video has instructions!

Banana Nut Butter Balls

1/2 cup packed whole pitted dates
1/4 cup water
1/3 cup LÄRABAR banana nut cashew and almond butter
1 cup gluten-free oats
2/3 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
1/3 cup raisins
1 tbs chia seeds

Coco Loco Smoothie

1 organic banana (cut into chunks and frozen)
1 1/2 cups almond & coconut milk
3 tbs LÄRABAR chocolate coconut cashew and almond butter

Summer Picnicking

Over the past five years and three apartments, there has been one consistent theme for my family: Living adjacent to a park.  My husband and I grew up in smaller towns and always had an outdoor space, so urban living has led us to seek out open, grassy, public parks as an extension of our urban living spaces.

Living near Lafayette Park in San Francisco allowed us to see some of the cities most adorable dogs, have a few impromptu BBQs with our makeshift grill, and put Harlowe in the grass. (She hated it in true city girl fashion.)

We loved that park and the memories we made there, but eventually it was time to move on and we headed south to Silicon Valley and most recently Santa Monica! As we’ve gathered with friends over the years, I learned how to pack food and drink that would satisfy a group, clean up easily and perhaps, most importantly, look great on the table or picnic blanket.

When it comes to picnics, I’m all about fresh colorful fruit, a savory item like chips, and something sweet like mini cupcakes. I say they’re for the kids, but they’re actually for KW and me. For drinks, I’m one of those people who finds it difficult to drink eight glasses of water a day so I rely on sparkling water. The more flavored the better! We recently tried IZZE Sparkling Water I picked up all three flavors Mandarin Lime, Blackberry Pear, and Raspberry Watermelon. They were all light, fresh and best of all, USDA Organic Certified – made with organic natural flavors and organic cane sugar.

As you can tell from the sleek, colorful bottles, IZZE elevates your summer picnic with friends and family, making them brighter, stylish and more interesting. Who could argue with that?

With two hectic schedules and one impatient toddler, we’re lucky if have dinner as a family more that a few times a week. When we do have dinner as a family, it’s usually delivery (thanks, DoorDash for keeping us fed!) or picked-up at the Whole Foods hot bar! This isn’t ideal, but look at the bright side: not cooking means more time with Harlowe. The not so bright side is that I’m not sure what’s in my food and chances are, it could be healthier. Luckily, Farm Fresh To You has helped me step up my fruits and vegetables game so I can make more meals at home.

Now that maternity leave has started, I’m at home waiting for my baby boy to arrive and there’s more time for creating healthy farm to table meals. With Farm Fresh to you, a carefully curated box of local and organic fruits and vegetables are delivered to our door. My grocery list is a lot shorter and my groceries are ten times easier to carry since I only have to pick up a handful of items to be served with my Farm Fresh box. The best part? You aren’t negotiating your health for the convenience!

Making use of my fruits and veggies quickly was easier than I imagined. Over the weekend, we hosted a few friends for brunch at our home. A medley of fresh fruit was the perfect addition to gluten-free blueberry pancakes. I just sliced the fruit into bite-sized and served it along side the main dish.

For some reason, being pregnant makes me crave milk like a baby cow. Having low-fat cottage cheese with my fruit has been one of my favorite summer treats.

OMG, there are no words for how much I love pesto. I’ll drizzle this savory sauce tastes good on gluten-free ravioli any day of the week, but decided to mix it up a bit last night by spooning it on to baked chicken with tomatoes and mozzarella. The tomatoes were so fresh, we ended up eating a few raw with a bit of salt sprinkled on top. If I’ve got your craving this now, make your own Skinny Chicken Pesto Bake with basil pesto using recipes even I can follow. Seriously, it’s so easy.

FitSnack Box Review

Healthy subscription boxes Healthy subscription boxes

I hope you all had a great weekend! Harlowe and I ended Sunday by unboxing our newest FitSnack box. I’m not going to proclaim that Harlowe is a ‘foodie’ just yet, but she sure loves her snacks. Every night before she goes to bed she asks me what she can eat when she wakes up and the conversation usually ends with her confirming that she can have “waffle, muffin, oatmeal and milk.” “Sure, Harlowe!” I say knowing her eyes, like mine, are bigger than her stomach.

Safe to say, I am continually impressed with the contents of FitSnack boxes. My favorite treats from this box were the Go Raw Chewy Apricot Bars, Sweet Potato Kettle Chips and the maternity-friendly bodyweight workout it came with (see below). The workout will be perfect for me while I’m traveling to Telluride later this week because you don’t need any equipment. Let’s break the rest of the box down simply.

Happy Face: As always, all goodies are gluten-free. There are multiples of a select snacks. Hey, two Go Raw Chewy Apricot Bars!

Frown Face: No ability to consider dietary preferences or allergies… like my peanut allergy or aversion to red meat.

The workout:
Squat x 50
Pushups x 40
Lunge left x 30
Lunge right x 30
Burpees x 10
Pullups x 5

I’m going to try getting through 2-3 reps of this 3 times this week. Who is with me?FitSnack May Review

Virgin Sangria Recipe

Sangria is definitely my summer drink of choice. Over the years, KW has become quite the sangria mixologist and has developed a signature recipe that is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser at summer togethers. This summer, my lovely beau has created a totally different virgin sangria recipe that I can enjoy. It’s sweet and citrus flavors are so crisp and refreshing and this recipe is a cinch to make.

Ingredients:

1 frozen can of fruit punch concentrate

1 orange (sliced)

1 apple (sliced)

1 lemon (sliced)

1 tbsp cinnamon

3 cups of club soda

non alcoholic sangria

Simply put sliced fruit and concentrate in a jug and muddle with a wooden spoon. Add cinnamon and pour club soda over the top. Place in the fridge for one hour to chill and enjoy! This drink is perfect for baby showers or any summer party where you’d like serve a special non-alcoholic drink to guests! if you have any favorite virgin cocktails, tell me about them in the comments below!

Glowing Skin Spinach Smoothie

cleanse, smoothie, breakfast smoothie, green smoothie, spinach and kale smoothie
After starting a quasi cleanse in August, I’ve been sticking to an improved diet. Mainly, replacing a nightly cocktail with a daily glass of greens. Along the way, I’ve learned some new things about fruits (they act as an illuminizer working from this inside!) and have concocted a skin-saving smoothie recipe that’s almost as good as some of the best store-bought highlighters and a whole lot tastier.
