iPhone Diary: Hello, Baby

maternity and nursing tops

*Brace yourself: I’m sleep deprived and this diary spans several topics.

It’s hard to believe that one week ago Gunnar came in to the world. So far, being Mom to two was/is a sleepless blur. We ended up staying in the hospital three nights vs. the anticipated one night due to an unexpected post-delivery incident that affected just me (thankfully). I’m recovering well, but much slower than I’d like.  That said, it’s been nice slowing down and staying at home snuggling Baby Boy in my own bed. He is the sweetest little boy I could have ever imagined having.

Can you resist the print on the blouse above? I can see this being worn on repeat through the end of Summer, and then in Fall with leggings and boots. It has an invisible zipper down the middle making it breastfeeding-friendly. I haven’t worn it post-partum yet because I still don’t have the strength to get out of the house for more than a short walk, but I am really looking forward to wearing it to sushi with KW soon. Man, I’ve missed sushi. If you are expecting or breast-feeding, get your hands on one of these maternity pieces now! Oh, use code BAP25 for 25% off.

natural beauty products

It’s all about natural, bare-faced beauty at the moment and I love the ‘natural’  look, but natural, toxin-free makeup product is really important too. I recently read here that the European Union currently bans 1,328 chemicals from its cosmetics but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has banned or restricted only 11. WTF? Opting for toxin-free products is not only better for you, but even more is on the line if you are pregnant or nursing because some of the product could be passed to baby. I’m glad I discovered Mineral Fusion makeup because they have so many great products and make it easy to go au naturale.

I tried several of their products over the past few weeks and fell in love with the lipsticks (above, top left), glosses (center) and mascara (bottom). The lipsticks are super hydrating and stay on forever. The glosses are not sticky at all and add a hint of color. The mascara doesn’t do much for length compared to my usual go-to, but it does make your lashes look t-h-i-c-k.

As you can see, I am slowly replacing my favorite products with natural ones. I still need a great natural BB cream and concealer. Can’t. Live. Without. Concealer. Have you tried “natural” beauty lines? Have you discovered any favorites?stripe maternity dress

#FBF to last week, a few hours before I delivered. I was wearing one of my favorite maternity dresses (last seen here) with Nike Internationalists in an attempt to walk the baby out. Walking must really help because we met him that night. Here we are right after delivery. I had so much adrenaline after delivery that I just got up, put on a warmer robe and walked around with him in my arms. I couldn’t do that the first time because I had an epidural, but this time we got to the hospital too late (21 minutes before delivery) and had to deliver naturally. It was such a rush. Maybe I’ll share the whole birth story later. Do you guys like those?

I’ll try to keep the blog consistent over the next few weeks, but if posts are spotty you’ll know why. Okay, back to feeding.  Or sleeping.  Where am I? Have a great weekend!

Yellow Maxi Dress

floppy hat and summer dress

Hi friends! Quick hello to share this golden yellow maxi dress. I love pairing animal print with yellow for Summer/Fall especially with a red lip. It’s the easiest combination and you can’t help but feel like a million bucks wearing it.

Dolled Up in Venice

maternity photos outfit ideas

One of the things I’ve loved about moving to LA is that it gives us the opportunity to explore many new places. The Venice canals are one of those LA places I’ll probably never tire of. They’re tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city making them a quiet retreat for family walks and an energy recharge. The gondola lined waters and sidewalks lined with big, modern houses bring you from Venice Italy back to Los Angeles just by turing your head another direction. I love being able to have a spot to walk by the water that isn’t quite as crowded as our beautiful beaches.

I’m wearing another dress from Envie de Fraises (see more of their maternity looks here and here) — this dress is so comfortable I wear it at least once a week. It’s easy to dress up with lace-up sandals or dress down with sneakers or Birkenstocks… yes, I love my Birks! 🙂

I’ll be the first to admit I haven’t begun nesting. Now that we are this far in, I’m guessing it’s not happening. Aside from ensuring the necessities: car seat, bassinet, stroller, chilled chardonnay (hey, it’s been 9 months… I’m planning on having a glass the night we get home from the hospital) are secured, it’s safe to say this ‘nesting period’ has been spent taking care of other things (like Harlowe). I know at the end of the day, as long as the baby is loved and fed, everything else will work out so I don’t get too stressed out about it, but there are some things I really want to accomplish before he comes.

As for unnecessary (but fun!) tasks, documenting our family of three, plus bump was fairly high on my prep list. Harlowe turned four this month and her Baby Brother is moments from making his debut so what better time snap a few shots for the family album? We rarely have photos of the three of us because it’s always KW or I behind the lens and this will be the last time we’ll be just the three of us.

Our photographer would tell KW and I to look at each other and Harlowe would say, “You guys, look at me!”

Fall Maternity Outfits

I don’t know about you, but I’m already falling for muted Fall colors. In LA, it doesn’t feel like Fall yet, since we had a major heatwave the past few days.  I’m compensating for the lack of chill with cooler colors. One of my favorite maternity brands, Isabella Oliver just got some of the cutest pieces in for Fall that (almost) make me wish pregnancy were a bit longer.

After wearing this dress throughout Spring/Summer, it’s nice to mix things up a bit since Fall really is just sartorially magnificent!

What’s your favorite Fall trend?

Parisian Chic

third trimester style

If you caught horizontal stripes: fattening or flattering? last week, you know my thoughts on the polarizing pattern. When worn right, they can be your wardrobe BFF. One thing I love about stripes is how “Parisian Chic” they feel especially when paired with something unexpected, yet simple like this crop top. This dress reminds me of the original gamine, Jean Seberg in ‘Breathless’. If you haven’t seen it; you must watch as there is some serious style inspiration to be found!

The short bell sleeves on this crop top are my favorite. Goes to show that little detail can add a lot of interest. Surely, this is French girl approved, non?

Horizontal Stripes: Flattering or Fattening?

casual maternity style

Whomever said horizontal stripes make the wearer look larger is no friend of mine. Stripes have proven to be a perennial favorite among practically everybody, myself included. I think of stripes, like animal print, as a wardrobe neutral and am happy to work them in to my wardrobe when I’m a bit larger.  At 37 weeks preggo, there’s no looking tiny, but with smaller stripes there’s no reason to eschew the beloved print. All horizontal stripes are not created equal, and narrow stripes tend to be more flattering which is why I fell in love with this dress! …Oh, and the side pockets. More dresses need side pockets!

Comforting Fall Florals

bohemian maternity dress

This weekend I spent most of my time on the couch combating a cold. Suffice it to say, having a cold while pregnant is not me.  It’s time…get this baby out of me! It’s been 37+ weeks and I’m ready to have my old body back (or at least start working toward having that body back because I know full well that it will take months to feel like ‘me’ again).

So what does a woman wear when she can no longer get up from a couch unassisted?  Sweatpants!  Flowy, versatile dresses!  I love this boho dress for several reasons; mostly, I love it because it channels beautiful fall colors (it’s already August?!)  and remains versatile enough to wear pre and post pregnancy.  The booties I picked up at the Nordstrom sale are going to be my go-tos this fall and are comfortable enough for swelling feet.  boho (non) maternity dressbohemian maternity dressbohemian maternity dress bohemian maternity dress

Summer Cashmere

isabella oliver layering tank

I wore this cardigan to SF a few weeks ago but just couldn’t take it off once I got back to LA. It’s a cashmere wool blend which I thought I’d never, ever, ever wear in LA during the summer, but the wool makes it the perfect accoutrement for an overcast, light-rain kind of day because it offers light protection from moisture (all one needs here!) and helps regulate fluctuating temperatures.

The SF-based retailer that makes this cardigan also sells these amazing oxfords which I’m going to have to start collecting once I don’t have this little baby bump threatening to pop all of my shirt buttons! At $55 each, I CANT (can’t afford not to). 🙂

I’m sipping on a ‘Wake Up’ smoothie from Dogtown Coffee — sooooo good! If you find yourself on Main Street in Santa Monica, do yourself a favor and pick one up! They’ve practically eliminated my need for coffee.

Maternity Style: Cute + Affordable

maternity style

When I was pregnant with Harlowe, maternity clothes were far from fabulous. I felt like a cheaply-dressed whale most days. Now, only four years later, it amazes me how cute maternity clothes have become. One of my favorite spots to browse dresses is PinkBlush maternity, a small, family-run company that provides stylish apparel both for women who are pregnant as well as for those who aren’t!  You can’t beat their prices, which is important when curating outfits which have nine-month shelf lives.

I wore this dress on my last flight to San Francisco and a few women asked me if it was a maternity dress. When I told one woman “yes,” it spurred a ten-minute conversation about how much maternity clothes have evolved.  This dress is helping me make friends everywhere I go!

Speaking of friends, PinkBlush and I are giving away $25 to one of you guys! See entry details below.
