The Chill Couple’s Guide to Valentine’s Day

healthy valentines day ideas

Neither The Banker or I have ever been big into all-out Romanticism in the name of Valentine’s Day, but that’s never stopped us from celebrating a day marked by adorable decor and obligatory gifts. For the couple that prefers athleisure to restrictive clothing and the comfort of their own home to long lines and pricey prix fixe menus, these celebratory ideas will say ‘I love you’ without the candy-heart hangover.

Take a couple’s yoga class. This is one of my all-time favorite ways to celebrate. Once we took a yoga class that commenced with a short but sweet demonstration in Thai massage where we were instructed to stretch and massage one another like pros. That was a decade ago and we still practice some of the curriculum.

Boxing. Nothing says ‘Me mine’ like a woman filled with zero rage because she just took it out on the bag. A boxing class together will make you both feel fiercely powerful (I’m usually channeling one of the Bella twins in class) and it’s a great way to let off some steam after a busy week.

Spread love. Visit a local homeless shelter or encampment to pass out food, warm clothes you don’t mind donating and essentials like toothbrushes and sunscreen. Bring a slew Valentine’s Day cards with sweet notes to make them feel loved too.

Date night at home. Pizza and wine anyone? My favorite place to grab a pizza (Hey, Fresh Brothers!) makes heart-shaped pizzas for Valentine’s Day which not only makes for great Instagram-worthy #valentinesday posts but is also basically guaranteed to give even the grumpiest of Valentine’s hungry little heart eyes. No novelty pizzas near you? You can easily make a heart-shaped pizza at home just grab some dough (or make some if you’re skilled in the kitchen) and shape it into a heart before piling on all your favorite toppings.

Meet at the gym. Something tells me I’m not alone in loving the gym when it’s near empty. Save for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, Valentine’s Day is sort of holy grail of near-empty gym time! It’s the perfect time to try a usually packed group-fitness class together and get those endorphins pumping. Don’t forget about girl time! This could be a great Galentine date before your night with your boo or in place of if you’re not coupled up this year. I mean, what says GRLPWR better than sweating with your bestie?
