Take Your Vitamins

If you’ve come to this blog before, you have likely gleaned that I am a big fan of balance especially when it comes to diet. It’s important to me to eat healthy, but I also want to enjoy a pizza with my kids on Friday night and have my daughter grow up seeing her mom eat dessert without guilt. While I indulge with them, we teach the kids the value of nutrition and making healthy choices.

One thing that scares me a little is knowing that no matter how healthy we eat, much of today’s food just doesn’t have the vitamins and minerals in it that it is intended to. Our soil used to be so rich with minerals and years of pesticides and growth hormones has destroyed or diluted the things we need to function at our best. Organic produce has between 20 and 40 percent more antioxidants than conventional fruits and vegetables, but I don’t trust myself to eat enough of them to fuel my body,  brain and cells with all that they need to run happily.

Most Americans (myself included) are getting only a couple of servings of fruits and vegetables every day and it’s recommended that we get up to nine servings (4 servings of fruit and 5 of vegetables). I drank my celery juice this morning, but I know myself well enough to know I probably need some organic supplements to make sure I get all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants I need.

I found Meology vitamins from Shaklee when searching for organic and holistic options. You know, someone to do the work for me of deciding what I need most and then making sure it is sourced and packaged sustainably. Shaklee does 100,000+ quality tests every year on their product ingredients screening for 350 contaminants, pesticides and impurities. They were the first company to be carbon neutral and the green Meology box that the vitamins come in is 100% recyclable and made from sustainable wind energy. It seemed I had found a winner.

They help select vitamins you need the most and take things into account like age, gender, life stage, your individual health goals, family history, what you eat and any diet preferences or sensitivities, and they actually pick the fewest products possible to meet your nutrient needs so you’re not going to have way too many pills! I can not swallow a bunch of pills at once, so this was super helpful to me. They also consider how everything they’ve put together for you will interact together and ensures that you have the correct, safe and effective amounts for your individual needs.

I got a pack to support healthy aging, compensate for limited sun exposure and compensate for my (mostly) wheat-free diet with nutrients I may be missing. There’s two plans you can pick from – the Essentials Plan, which includes the supplements that are most important and foundational and the Essentials Plus Plan, which includes the foundational supplements and more targeted solutions. Like all regimens, it can take time to see results from taking vitamins but Shaklee does offer a 100% money back guarantee so if at any point you’re not completely satisfied, you can send them back and you’ll get a full refund. I’m giving it 30 days, but 2 weeks in I already know this is going to be a good fit for me because I can see that I have better energy before, during and after my workouts so it’s helping me reach my fitness goals faster.
